Cape Town police probe race-related assaults

Cape Town - Western Cape police are investigating an incident of assault at an upmarket shopping centre in Green Point, a confrontation caused by racist remarks from one person to another.

The assault took place at an ATM in Cape Quarter. Two white men, who were apparently inebriated, had been taking too long withdrawing cash from the ATM, a witness has told SA Daily News.

When asked by another customer to hurry up, the men at the ATM turned and said “you dirty black kaffirs...”

A cellphone clip of the incident then shows one of the white men rearing for a fight and promising the black man he will “fuck you up”.

The black man then knocks the white man to the ground and pins him down with his foot. The black man then shouts repeatedly “who’s a black kaffir hey”.

A woman who says she witnessed the entire incident told blog Life is Savage that the drunk men were insulting women too.

She said after he was attacked, the man was helped up by a security guard who he later called “useless and worthless and probably only earns R4 000 per month”.

Banned from Cape Quarter

In a post on Facebook, the shopping centre said the matter has been escalated to the police and CCTV footage has been handed over to assist in resolving the dispute. The individuals involved in the incident have been banned from Cape Quarter.

“The safety of our shoppers is a priority and cases like these will not be taken lightly. The individuals have been banned from the centre and we'd like to thank everyone for their concern.”

Meanwhile, police in the suburb of Claremont, also in Cape Town, are also investigating a case of assault after a young man was beaten with a sjambok in broad daylight by a man who accused him of breaking into his white BMW X5.

Muhammed Makungwa, 22, was late for his job as a gardener and was running from Palmyra Road, Claremont, to his workplace in Mayfield Avenue, Rondebosch, reports the Cape Times.

Makungwa was left with a deep gash on his shoulder and a deep head wound. He said his attacker was a white man who looked like he was in his 50s.

The incident mirrors a previous one in the nearby neighbourhood of Kenilworth when 41-year-old Tim Osrin beat up Cynthia Joni.

Osrin apparently thought Joni, who works as a domestic worker in the area, was a prostitute, reported the Cape Argus.
