Cape Town - The man who was shot dead at a busy Cape Town petrol station last Saturday was out on bail in a murder case at the time, according to reports.
Toufiq Joseph, 23, had four knives in his car, including a bloodied knife, when he was shot dead, the Cape Times reported on Wednesday.
The man accused of killing him, David Forbes, 48, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. He will be back in court on Wednesday for the outcome of his bail application, which was not opposed by the State.
Forbes's defence team stated in court on Tuesday that Forbes acted in self-defence when he shot Joseph at point-blank range, and had a 14cm cut on his right arm, Eyewitness News reported.
According to the Cape Times, Joseph had been due to appear in court on Wednesday along with two others. One of his co-accused had been arrested for murder, and Joseph was also facing a charge of housebreaking, but the charges had not yet been put to him.
It also emerged in court that Forbes had a previous conviction for common assault in the 1990s and paid an admission of guilt fine, the newspaper reported.
Earlier reports indicated the two men may have been arguing over the sale of tickets to a music festival.
