Cape Town – Chaos broke out during the City of Cape Town’s first full council meeting on Wednesday after ANC councillors were locked out, according to reports.
Eyewitness News reported that councillors of the ruling-party had tried to push their way into the venue, but had been stopped by law enforcement officers.
According to reports the meeting got heated when the ANC councillors clashed with DA councillors over the demolition of houses.
Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille tweeted: “The ANC behaved like thugs today [Wednesday]. They tried to provoke law enforcement and even spat on some of them.”
She said the ANC had tried to disrupt the meeting and were asked to stop by the Speaker.
“After the ANC refused, the Speaker asked them to leave the meeting, which they refused to do,” she said.
According to De Lille the meeting was then reconvened in another room, without the ANC councillors, who tried to force their way in and “were prevented by law enforcement officers from doing so as they had disobeyed the rules”.
“The behaviour of the ANC today is a disgrace. This is part of their campaign to make the City ungovernable.”
ANC’s Xolani Sotashe, told Bush Radio, that there is no truth that they caused chaos.
He said all the ANC councillors wanted were answer regarding the demolition of Plumstead houses for the MyCiti project, adding that the DA was running away from issue.
