Chris Nissen arrested for drunken driving

Cape Town - Anti-apartheid activist Chris Nissen, who is also a former ANC Western Cape chairperson, was arrested for drunken driving in his Porsche SUV in Cape Town over the weekend.

The Daily Voice reported that Nissen was stopped at a roadblock in Kraaifontein on Sunday afternoon.

A breathalyser test showed Nissen was over the legal limit.

Western Cape police confirmed his arrest.

Die Son reported that Nissen was released on a warning and will appear in court on 22 October.

According to the Daily Voice, Nissen had to return to the roadblock as police could not remove his Porsche Cayenne without his fingerprint to start the car.

The City of Cape Town said in a media release on Monday that metro police had clamped down on drunk drivers over the weekend, making 65 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, 21 of these being in the Kraaifontein area.

News24 attempted to contact Nissen on Tuesday but was unsuccessful.

ANC national executive committee member Tony Yengeni was arrested for drunken driving in Cape Town in August 2013. He appeared in court again in November 2014 and is due to appear in court on 28 January.
