Port Elizabeth - Christopher Panayiotou, the alleged mastermind behind the murder of his wife Jayde, is on 24-hour watch for fear he might try to commit suicide.
Panayiotou, 28, is awaiting trial at St Albans prison in Port Elizabeth, reported Netwerk24. If he is refused bail, he will continue to await trial at the prison.
When it is feared that detainees might try to harm themselves, they are not allowed matches with them as they might try to set their mattress on fire, according to the report.
Awaiting trial and convicted prisoners are not held together. Between 50 and 60 prisoners awaiting trial are kept in a cell.
Panayiotou's lawyer confirmed to News24 on Wednesday that his client will be applying for bail.
Panayiotou was nabbed in an apparent sting days after Jayde's murder.
