Controversial Operation Fiela conducted in Kagiso

Johannesburg - The controversial "Operation Fiela" continued on Friday with police moving to Kagiso on the West Rand.

"We conducted this operation in Kagiso and confiscated a large amount of counterfeit DVDs, dagga, illicit cigarettes, dangerous weapons, pangas, and knives," said Constable Lucky Matome, spokesperson for the Krugersdorp policing cluster.

Detectives also brought along names of suspects they had not yet been able to collar and nabbed nine of them on various charges.

Two people who were thought to be in the country illegally were detained for a short period, but their documents were verified and they were released.

Officials also closed a few tuck shops for violating fire safety regulations.

Besides the police, the Department of Home Affairs, and fire safety services participated.

Human rights organisations have slammed Operation Fiela, saying police are discriminating against foreign nationals by targeting them during the raids.

Police said the operation was started in response to pleas during April's xenophobic attacks to clean up communities.
