Cop, motorist hurt in cigarette heist

Johannesburg - A motorist and a policeman were shot and wounded when an armed gang hijacked a truck transporting cigarettes near Randfontein on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

The two were hit during a shoot-out between the police and the gang of about 12 men, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said in a statement.

The incident happened around 06:00 on the R28 between Sebokeng and Randfontein, after police received information about the planned hijacking.

Police found three vehicles parked next to the side of the road and the occupants started shooting at them.

The truck was found in nearby field where the hijackers were moving cigarettes into a bakkie.

The wounded two were taken to hospital.

Police are searching for suspects driving a BMW, a Kia bakkie and a Moran SUV.
