Cops out in numbers in Joburg CBD to control rampaging pupils

Johannesburg –  Police are out in numbers at the Johannesburg Legislature as protesting pupils have gathered in the streets.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini told News24 on Wednesday that at 15:30 a large group of pupils were still outside the legislature.

“We have officers on the scene monitoring the situation, but are not sure why they are marching,” he said.

The march was reportedly organised by the Congress of South African Students.

Earlier reports said the children dressed in school clothes where wreaking havoc in the CBD as they looted street vendors and forced shops to close.

Dlamini said police had received no reports of looting as yet, adding they would analyse the situation as it continues.

Sapa reported that four pupils were taken to hospital after being attacked by shop owners while they were looting.

"Four male learners assaulted by shopkeepers, who retaliated [to looting], were taken to hospital," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.
