Durban - A man was killed when his Hibiscus Coast Municipality vehicle was sprayed with bullets in a suspected drive-by shooting near Marburg on Wednesday night.
A teenage relative had leapt from the moving bakkie as it was being riddled with rifle fire.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the bakkie had eventually come to rest against a roadside barrier.
“The vehicle then came to a standstill when it crashed into a barrier on the side of the road. Police found heavy calibre gun cartridges as well as handgun cartridges on the scene,” he said.
“A young teenage girl was seen jumping out of the vehicle while it was still moving up the hill,” Zwane added.
“The door of the vehicle on the driver’s side had several bullet holes. The driver was found with multiple gunshot wounds and the teen was taken to the hospital in a stable condition. It is believed that she is related to the deceased,” he said.
“Police are looking for a white sedan which was seen speeding away from the scene. At this stage police are still investigating the motive for the attack. A murder docket was opened at Port Shepstone.”
A source close to the investigation said the man was found with large amounts of cash in his vehicle, as well as his own holstered firearm.
