Johannesburg – A man and woman sustained critical burn wounds outside the home affairs office in Pinetown, Durban, on Friday, police and paramedics said.
"Preliminary information at this point indicates that a man may have set the woman on fire and then himself," said a police source who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
"There is also no way to tell why this was done until the two are interviewed. Neither can speak."
He said the woman's burns were so severe that a hair piece she was wearing melted onto her scalp.
ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said the two were critically injured and taken to hospital. She could not provide further details.
