Court orders that De Kock's lawyers can see him

Johannesburg - The North Gauteng High Court granted an order on Friday that apartheid-era assassin Eugene de Kock's lawyers must have access to him, his lawyer Julian Knight said.

The court ordered that the paroled former Vlakplaas commander's lawyers also be allowed to consult with him in private.

It was announced on January 30 by Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha that he would be released on parole, but in March Knight complained that De Kock's whereabouts were not known.

According to an earlier report by Independent Online, the urgent high court application asked the State to produce him within 24 hours, saying they were being refused access to him, and that he was being held illegally in a safe house.

The "Free Eugene de Kock" Facebook page claimed that De Kock was being held by the State Security Agency.

SSA spokesperson Brian Dube would not say a direct yes or no, telling News24: "It is not our matter, it is a matter of the department of correctional services".

''He belongs to them. They should know where he should be, if they sent him overseas, where is he... It is not our matter.

''We refuse to be drawn into speculation about Eugene De Kock," Dube said.

The Independent report said De Kock had advised his lawyers that he had been given an ultimatum by government officials that unless he accepted their proposals and conditions, he would not be freed or released on parole.
