DA elects new leadership in North West

Durban - The Democratic Alliance elected a new provincial leader in North West province on Saturday.

At the party’s sixth provincial congress Joe McGluwa was elected provincial leader, replacing Chris Hattingh, who had held the post for the past 16 years.

A statement from the party said that more than 250 delegates attended the congress where the party’s newly elected national leader Mmusi Maimane addressed them in Hartebeespoort.

According to the statement Hattingh would continue as a member of the provincial legislature.

Petro Nel was elected deputy leader while Carin Visser was elected provincial chairperson.

Three deputy provincial chairpersons were also elected. They are Ronald Mathloloa, Klaas Melamu and Gys Smit.

McGluwa, who was previously the party’s deputy leader in the province, told delegates that the party’s leadership would attempt to tackle rural issues and win new supporters for the party.
