DA wants full-scale probe into KZN gang-rape

Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance on Thursday called for a full-scale investigation into the alleged gang-rape of a high school girl after a matric dance.

"This incident requires a full-scale joint investigation involving both the KwaZulu-Natal community safety and education departments," Democratic Alliance MPL Rishigen Viranna said in a statement.

"It is time that a very clear message was sent out that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated."

On Wednesday, the community safety department said it was investigating a video of the alleged gang-rape.

The video was circulated on social media, department spokesperson Sipho Khumalo said at the time.

"We have not yet identified anyone and have to be careful to make sure the name of the school is not known, as this might lead to the victim being identified."

He said the incident happened a week ago. He did not have further details on where in Pietermaritzburg it happened.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the case was being investigated by the SAPS child protection and sexual offences unit in Pietermaritzburg.

On Thursday, Viranna said the education department needed to conduct its own probe into how drugs and alcohol were allegedly available at the matric dance.

"It is saddening that this scourge continues despite the best efforts of many to change the way in which so many women are treated.

"It is essential that this young woman and her family receive the counselling they need."

No investigation will be done. They are too busy enquiring into the killing of the violent armed striking thugs at Marikana. The ANC doesn't care about a defenceless schoolgirl.

We really need these people caught and a very harsh punishment given if they are guilty. When will this behavior stop? Will it stop?

...And what's gonna happen after the investigations? Kids these days experiment with alcohol and sex drugs. It happens everywhere even during spring day celebrations. The onus is on Parents to make sure that they act as responsible role models. If the DA says it is shocked, I'm saddened by these sentiments because always when it happens some politician will make a statement. And dissapear. The following drugs "Tshoswane" and alcohol shouldn't be sold @ all because they are. Used to rape women

Thanks DA for investigating a gang rape issue in SA while the ANC is like usual useless.

How terribly sad, any mention of a 'Matric Dance' now and in the future will haunt this poor girl for life, no fond memories for her, she will never be able to share fond memories of her 'Matric Dance' with her daughter should she ever have a daughter one day. So sad...how uncalled for, really, leaves me speechless.
