Daveyton protest on hold

Johannesburg - A protest in Daveyton was temporarily suspended on Tuesday afternoon pending a meeting, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

"The protest is in on hold for now pending a meeting between community leaders and municipal officials," said Chief Superintendent Vusi Mabanga.

"We do not know what will happen after the meeting, residents are waiting for their leaders to give them feedback."

He said roads in Daveyton were still blocked with burning tyres, rocks, tree-trunks and other objects.

"We are monitoring the situation. No arrests have been made and there are no casualties."

Metro police said earlier that the protest started on Monday when residents tried to "illegally invade land", but were prevented from doing so.
