Derby-Lewis has been in hospital since last year

Durban - Clive Derby-Lewis has been in hospital since last year where he is being treated for cancer, but the Department of Correctional Services cannot reveal where he’s being treated.

Correctional Services spokesperson Logan Maistry said on Sunday that Derby-Lewis  was receiving treatment in accordance with the department’s policies.

The cost of the guards and the treatment was being paid for by Derby-Lewis.

“He is paying for the treatment and his doctors have advised that he needs to be hospitalised. He has been there since last year, but we cannot disclose his location.”

Media reports this weekend revealed that Derby Lewis, who was convicted for the April 1993 killing of SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani, was in a Pretoria hospital and had been there for the past 14 months.

Maistry said he could not immediately confirm how long Derby-Lewis had been in hospital, except to say that he was aware that it had been since last year.

Derby-Lewis, who was earlier this year denied medical parole, was arrested for providing the gun used by Janusz Walus, a Polish immigrant, to kill SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani in the driveway of his Boksburg home on April 10 1993.

Derby-Lewis was found guilty of conspiracy to murder and sentenced to death, but this was commuted to a life sentence after South Africa abolished capital punishment.
