Cape Town – A dog in Pietermaritzburg has been rescued by the SPCA after being stuck in a snare for two days.
Buddy, as he is affectionately called, was rescued near Town Bush Road, according to The Witness.
The Labrador-cross had been trapped for two nights in the bush, with a snare made of barbed wire fastened around its waist.
According to Greg Froud, a resident in the area, the dog would only howl at night so it was particularly difficult to find him.
The police from the Pietermaritzburg K9 Dog Unit were called in and spent three hours searching for the distressed animal.
“The police were absolutely fantastic,” said Froud as they searched for the pup in muddy and wet conditions.
“We didn’t know what we would find when we got there,” said Froud.
“At one point I had said we should give up and come back in the daylight, but the police insisted we carry on crawling around in the dark through thick bush until we eventually found him. He was so stressed. The wire was so tight around his waist we couldn’t see it.”
Buddy is now on the road to recovery and is being treated with painkillers and vitamins.
His owner has not been traced as there was no collar around his neck, though according to the SPCA the dog looked to be fell fed.

In March a 14-year-old Free State boy had been arrested for allegedly cutting off a dog's ears and attempting to saw off its tail.
Netwerk24's Marietjie Gericke reported that the boy's sister rushed to the Bloemfontein SPCA to tell them he was abusing the dog.
A senior inspector accompanied her back to the house, where they found the badly injured animal.
Both its ears had been cut off with wire and blood was running from the wounds. The injured areas were swollen.
The tail was cut in two places - almost sawn through in one area, while the other area was cut to the bone.
The inspector said the dog howled in pain when she touched it.
The boy ran away but was later found and arrested.
The dog was confiscated and is now receiving medical attention.
