Dramatic shoot-out ends in 21 arrests

Johannesburg - Twenty-one people have been arrested in connection with attempted murder in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

The arrests late on Wednesday night came after members of the Hawks, the SA Police Service and the Durban Harbour Tactical Response Team conducted an operation which led them to a house at Stanger Minor, said police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.

"Through further investigation the members proceeded to a house at Stanger Minor area, KwaDukuza where they entered the premises.

"As they approached the premises, it is alleged that the occupants started to shoot towards the members and the police called for back-up."

The police raided the house and found 15 firearms including AK47 rifles, LM4 semi-automatic rifles, and pistols as well as a large amount of assorted ammunition.

"Police bulletproof vests and army jackets were also found in the house," said Zwane.

The group were arrested and charged with attempted murder, obstructing police officers and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

"Arrested suspects might be linked to ongoing taxi related violence cases that were reported at Stanger and Maphumulo area."

They are expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court soon.
