Durban taxi driver gunned down

Durban - A taxi driver was brutally murdered in Lamontville, Durban, on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu said, expressing his concern about the continued killings in the area.

Bhabha Dlamini, 50, was shot several times by unknown assailants, Mchunu said in a statement on Friday.

The murder came a month after Lamontville Taxi Association chairperson Vela Ndebele was killed outside the Lamontville Community Hall.

"This incident has brought fear to the taxi industry in the area and also the community at large as this is not the first incident of this nature," he said.

The provincial transport department has set up a team from its public transport unit to investigate what was fuelling the killings.

"We also remain optimistic that police will find perpetrators of Dlamini’s murder.

"This incident will not deter us as we are making serious progress in terms of bringing about peace and stability in the taxi industry.”

Mchunu sent condolences to Dlamini's family.

Taxi violence in Gauteng

Earlier this week there were also incidents of taxi violence in Gauteng.

A woman was killed and two others injured when a group of men opened fire in Tembisa, on Johannesburg's East Rand on Tuesday.

All three were passengers on a taxi.

Police believe the shooting was linked to two taxi associations fighting over routes.

Also in Tembisa on Monday, a queue marshal was shot and wounded at Sangweni taxi rank.

Another taxi driver was gunned down outside his house in Soweto in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
