E Cape gears up for festive season

Johannesburg - Road safety plans are in place ahead of the festive season, the Eastern Cape transport department said on Saturday.

Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana met district heads from the provincial traffic department as well as road safety and communication officials on Friday to finalise the road safety campaign for the festive season, spokesperson Ncedo Kumbaca said in a statement.

The campaign would be unveiled during the launch of the Arrive Alive Campaign at the Dukathole Stadium in Aliwal North on 8 December.

Kumbaca said a special task team had also been established to "deal with labour relations issues affecting traffic officers", which previously disrupted law enforcement services during the busy festive season.

The department would also acquire 120 new vehicles towards improving traffic law enforcement during the festive season and beyond.

Tikana said this year's safety campaign would be better than in previous years.

“We are convinced that we are more than ready for this season."

"We will have a campaign with a difference, which will be characterised by mass mobilisation, road safety education, strengthened collaboration with all role players and improved communications."
