The Economic Freedom Fighters in Mpumalanga wants the legislature to elect a new premier at its next sitting.
Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza has been off duty for 37 days since he allegedly collapsed and was airlifted to hospital.
Since then rumours have been circulating that he had either died, suffered a stroke or had kidney failure. Mabuza has been placed on indefinite leave. According to his office, he is recuperating at home and being monitored by doctors.
EFF legislature member Collen Sedibe said this afternoon that the house should debate the election of new premier at its next sitting – amid protests from ANC members, who accused him of being “inhumane” and of “political opportunism”.
“We must debate the inability of the premier to perform his duties given his absenteeism and indefinite leave as we cannot have a permanent acting premier [Safety and Security MEC Vusi Shongwe],” Sedibe said.
Before Sedibe spoke, Shongwe had told the legislature that the people of the province should not panic and should not listen to the rumours.
“The premier can come back to work any time when doctors give him the go-ahead. He is alive … he spoke for a minute and half on Ligwalagwala FM a few weeks ago to assure the province he is alive. The Mpumalanga government is running well and the province is stable,” Shongwe said.
