Durban - The Economic Freedom Fighters believes the party is being politically sabotaged after it claimed the eThekwini Municipality cancelled its Freedom Day rally scheduled to be held at the John Dube Stadium in Durban.
However, eThekwini spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa said the stadium has been made available to the EFF.
"The stadium is available and has been hired out [to] the EFF," she said in an SMS to News24.
The EFF said it had received communication from the City on Friday at 17:00, three days before the event, that it could not use the stadium due to renovations, spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said.
This after the party had already paid for the venue, complied with all regulations and attended joint operations meetings.
Ndlozi said the party had already printed 2 000 posters and 30 000 fliers which had been distributed and paid for buses to transport people to the rally.
"This is a clear act of political sabotage aiming to undermine the progress and growth that the EFF is making in KwaZulu-Natal," he said.
"All the community meetings have been attended by thousands of people, including in institutions of higher learning. Instead of reacting politically, the ANC has resorted to undermine the EFF's constitutional rights to freedom of assembly."
Ndlozi said the EFF was planning on approaching the court on an urgent basis asking that no construction take place at the stadium until after the party's rally.
