Mahikeng - The EFF won the Student Representative Council elections at the North West University's Mahikeng campus.
"NWU Mafikeng Campus SRC Results: EFF 6/SASCO 6. EFF won President & Academic Officer, constitutionally we are the winners," the party said on its Twitter account on Wednesday.
"EFF congratulates its newly elected NWU Mafikeng Campus SRC President Benz Mabengwane."
NWU spokesperson Koos Degenaar confirmed the results.
Sasco could not immediately be reached for comment.
Speaking to students in Mahikeng ahead of the election, Malema called President Jacob Zuma a "brainless bonus" in the generation of struggle heroes.
"When generations after us come, they will say at least we took an initiative. You have responsibility to elect fearless people," he told the students, according to the EFF Twitter account.
After the ANC's national executive committee meeting in June, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe expressed concern at Sasco's "poor" performance during SRC elections at universities around the country.
"It was agreed that the ANC Youth League's contestation for the leadership of SRCs should be strongly discouraged," he told reporters at the time.
"Every member of the ANC Youth League must be a member of Sasco in every campus."
Mantashe said Sasco needed to understand that student politics was about the day-to-day issues and not the "universal political concepts".
"Being rooted among students is critical for the strengthening of Sasco.
"There must be a programme that is ongoing and not only focusing on SRC elections."
