Johannesburg - A 27-year old man caught speeding at 170km/h in a 120km/h zone in Alberton, claimed he was late for work when traffic authorities stopped him in his tracks early this morning.
The arrested man was travelling in his white Suzuki Swift car when he was stopped by members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said. He was charged at the Alberton police station for reckless and negligent driving, and is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court this week.
Meanwhile, on the same stretch of road on Sunday morning between 06:00 and 11:00, seven drivers were nabbed for going well beyond the 120km/h speed limit, Kgasago said in a statement. The fastest was a 48-year-old motorcyclist caught at 08:33 doing 195km/h in his white Honda.
A 36-year-old woman travelling in a Mercedes Benz A45 was locked up for clocking 178km/h. The rest of the speedsters were caught with speeds of between 169km/h and 161km/h.
Charges of reckless and negligent driving were registered against all the arrested drivers at Alberton police. They were all released after posting bail of R1 000 each.
