Eugene De Kock helping search for remains

Pretoria - Apartheid-era assassin Eugene de Kock is helping the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) search for the remains of people killed in the country decades ago, reported the Pretoria News on Friday.

The NPA confirmed that for the past six months, De Kock has been assisting a missing persons task team to locate the remains of people who disappeared during apartheid.

Meanwhile, Sapa reports that the Vlakplaas ‘death squad’ boss will know in January next year whether he will be granted parole.

His lawyer, Julian Knight, said there was a "positive indication" he will be granted parole after an agreement was reached in the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday.

"I think it is very positive and a very positive indication that he will be given parole when the minister finally decides on or before the 31st of January," Julian Knight told reporters outside the court.

"We have a new minister. I don't want to pre-judge, we will see what happens when a decision is made."

A victim offender dialogue had taken place since August and Knight said the minister was "happy on that basis".

He said he was not part of the dialogue and could not comment on the response from the families of De Kock's victims.
