Fake cop with gun barred from ANC NGC

Johannesburg - Security at the ANC's National General Council on Saturday was beefed up after a man tried to enter the conference with a gun after claiming to be a police officer.

The man tried to enter Gallagher Estate on Friday without an accreditation tag, Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mashadi Selepe said.

This was after he had earlier in the day dropped off his boss who was a guest at the NGC.

It was not clear why he had returned.

"When he wanted to get in he did not have his accreditation with [him] and he could not get in.

"He further produced an appointment certificate belonging to the police, claiming that he was the police."

After further interrogation the man was found to be in possession of a gun.

He was immediately arrested.

High police presence

Selepe said it was later discovered that the gun belonged to the company where he worked.

"[The man] is currently in police custody, arrested and we are charging him with impersonating the police and we also confiscated the firearm because we need to do further investigation on the firearm," she added.

Following Friday's incident security at the NGC venue was tighter on Saturday.

Delegates and media entering Gallagher Estate were asked to open the bonnets and boots of their cars and remove all bags.

The bags were then scanned and sniffer dogs were taken through the vehicle.

There was a high police presence at the conference with some security driving around the precinct on four wheelers.
