Four women have been killed at or near the University of Venda, in Thohoyandou, since the start of the year, reported the Times.
Three of the women were students who were either stabbed or strangled. At least two of them were raped.
Last week the body of a cleaner was found near the university’s administration block. She had been raped and then beaten to death.
The Limpopo department of safety, security and liaison said all the members of the police team investigating the murders were experienced officers.
The president of the university's students' representative council, Fukie Uhuru Mofokeng, complained to the Times about security holes at the tertiary institution, saying that campus was often full of non-students and that equipment had often been lost.
Earlier this month, members of a Thohoyandou community feared that a serial killer was on the loose after a 9-year-old girl was abducted from her school and raped and murdered.
The body of the little girl was found near where a badly injured University of Venda student was recently found.
