Durban - Five people were arrested on Saturday following a service delivery protest in northern KwaZulu-Natal, police said.
Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the protest took place in the early hours of Saturday in the small town of Mbazwana in the uMhlabuyalingana Local Municipality, about 150km north of Richards Bay.
"The community embarked on an illegal protest, they blockaded the road with shards and burning tyres demanding service delivery. Police were alerted about the demonstration and they proceeded to the area where they met the violent crowd."
He said that police arrested five protesters after instructions to disperse were ignored.
He said the five would appear in the Jozini Magistrate's court soon on charges of public violence.
