Former DA MP joins Front National

Cape Town - Former Democratic Alliance MP Deetlefs du Toit has joined Front National, a political party that fights for Afrikaner "self-determination".

The former DA shadow deputy minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries was announced as a new recruit by the Front National at a press conference in Paarl on Friday.

Du Toit, who served as a DA MP from 2009 until last year, said he had left the official opposition because the party policies had changed "suddenly and dramatically".

"The DA is not interested in minority rights at all, and that includes all minority groups."

He said should the DA be elected into power, not much would change in government, except there would be a little less corruption.

Du Toit, who was a member of various committees in Parliament under the DA, said he had joined the Front National because they fought for certain priorities.

"There are too many politicians in Parliament only for the sake of their own pockets. Those are people turning politics into a career. Front National convinced me that they are not interested in that; they are here to fight for certain priorities, in particular self-determination. Let us give them the opportunity.

"I was part of the DA caucus, I sat on the Parliamentary seats, [DA leader] Mmusi Maimane and other leaders have no vision for anything other than the current disposition. Polititians sometimes sells hope, even false hope."

A relatively new party, the Front National was formed in 2013, and has been vocal about protecting the rights of the Afrikaners in the country.
