Four robbers escape after high-speed chase, shootout

Cape Town - Police found several weapons left behind by four suspected robbers who escaped when a high-speed chase through Kuils River ended in a crash on Tuesday.

The gunmen are understood to have been fleeing a crime scene – most likely a house that was robbed in Somerset West less than two hours earlier – when they were spotted along the R102 by a pair of traffic officers on patrol at 20:25.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said a house had been robbed in Somerset West at 18:40 on Tuesday night.

“Four armed, unidentified men wearing balaclavas and dark clothing approached the complainant while he waited in his vehicle for his gate to close,” he said.

He was forced into the house, where the attackers bound him, his wife and son before they removed items from the house.

The men fled the scene in a Golf 6 and a Golf 7, both belonging to the victim.

According to a statement released by the City of Cape Town, a white Ford Kuga and a VW Golf were seen speeding in Kuils River on Tuesday and the officers gave chase.

The drivers were forced to stop at a red robot and one of the officers approached the Golf, said mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.

The driver, with gun in hand, jumped out of the car and allegedly pushed the officer to the ground.

The officer then alerted her colleague, who fired three shots as the two cars sped off.

“The police joined the chase and a few minutes later, the driver of the Kuga collided with two other vehicles at a four-way stop.

“The driver of one of the vehicles sustained serious injuries. Unfortunately, the two occupants in the Kuga managed to flee the scene.”

The driver of the Golf led the police on a chase into Eerste River, before hitting a kerb and colliding with a police vehicle, Smith said.

The man fired several shots at the officers while fleeing the scene.

“It soon emerged that both vehicles were stolen and had been used in an armed robbery in Somerset West earlier that evening. While all four suspects got away, officers recovered several firearms in the two vehicles, including an R4 rifle and a hunting rifle,” he said.

Stolen goods were also found in the car.
