Free State murder suspect seen on CCTV footage

Bloemfontein - Free State police investigating the murder of a popular University of the Free State lecturer over the weekend believe he knew his attacker.

Volksblad reported on Wednesday that Lehlohonolo Mathengtheng, 27, was presumably attacked on his bed and then dragged to another room in his flat in Willows. Police believe the blood splatter marks on the walls indicate he tried to fight back after his throat was slit.

According to Volksblad, he was found naked and a used condom was found at the scene.

A neighbour who lived in the flat underneath told the newspaper she saw him arrive at the block with another man on Friday night. She later heard noises which sounded as if someone was moving furniture around.

Police said a cellphone and his car were missing.

Meanwhile, Free State radio station OFM reported on Wednesday that police had obtained CCTV footage of a suspect.

The suspect was seen abandoning Mathengtheng's car at a taxi rank, and was also seen in a Willows supermarket.

Police are trying to trace the suspect.

The motive for the murder is unknown.

Mathengtheng was a graduate student and lecturer in the department of medical microbiology and virology at UFS. He was described as hardworking, ambitious and friendly. A Facebook memorial page has been set up for him.
