Fuel tanker crash causes massive blaze on Durban highway

Durban - A diesel and petrol tanker have crashed on the N2 northbound at the Sarnia road overhead bridge between the Chatsworth offramp and Queensburgh in Durban, causing a massive fire, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services said early on Tuesday.

The fire continued to spread across the highway, said KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie.

"The KZN EMS paramedics on scene have reported that the two people are being treated for minor injuries," said McKenzie.

Eyewitness Peter Avis told News24 that the trailer of one tanker had rolled across the highway, carpeting the tarred road with the fuel.

"The flames are so high that they are covering the bridge which is approximately 150 metres high," Avis said.

"A train which was coming along the bridge had to brake for fear of catching alight," he said.

Scores of emergency service personnel were on scene but the intensity of the blaze was making it difficult for them to douse the flames.

"The road is too hot for them to get to the tanker or even just the middle of the blaze," Avis said.

Mckenzie said eThekwini fire and rescue fighters were trying to control the blaze, which has spread to both sides of the highway.

The road remained closed in both directions.
