Johannesburg - Sophiatown top cop Colonel Mohale Masia has appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on charges including corruption, the Hawks said on Tuesday.
Masia who was in charge of visible policing operations at Sophiatown police station, was arrested just after he reported for duty on Monday.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the 51-year-old was arrested for allegedly defeating the ends of justice and corruption.
"We recently received a tip-off that in October last year, the man conspired to release a suspect from prison, and also demanded R6 000 bribe money to have his docket destroyed," he said.
Hangwani said police then did a proper investigation which led to Masia's arrest.
Masia was released on R5 000 bail.
He will appear again in court on November 12.
