Gauteng to get 11 new 'smart' schools

Johannesburg - Eleven new "smart" schools will be constructed in Gauteng, infrastructure development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza announced on Tuesday.

"The smart schools will incorporate technological learning in classrooms boasting connectivity, Promethean [interactive] boards, visual screens, and technology training centres," she told reporters in Johannesburg.

"We are developing prototype designs for the new schools based on the smart classroom concept."

The construction of the 11 schools would begin this year and it was expected that some could be completed by next year.

Mayathula-Khoza said other infrastructure projects for the education department included refurbishing other schools, erecting fencing, and installing septic tanks.

She said R1.3bn had been allocated for these in the 2014/15 financial year.
