East London - A 16-year-old Eastern Cape girl's birthday festivities ended in tragedy when she died from apparent drug-related complications last weekend.
The Daily Dispatch reported on Tuesday that the girl had turned 16 last Thursday and had gone out to a popular bar to celebrate with six friends on Saturday night.
Even though they were all underage, they apparently got into the bar because the venue was not checking identity documents as spectators from a nearby rugby match moved into the venue for an after-party.
The girl's aunt told the newspaper the girl was having an energy drink and her friends bought drugs, believed to be ecstasy. She put a tablet in her drink and later started vomiting and convulsing.
She was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
According to the aunt, the friends said this was the first time the girl had tried drugs. She was described as a Christian who loved going to church.
Recently, a 21-year-old Cape Town woman died after becoming ill at a trance party.
According to Health24, ecstasy is a party drug which enables the user to dance through the night. However, it can cause blurred vision, seizures, nausea and vomiting. It can be dangerous to those with heart disease and asthma. Experts warn that like many street drugs, it is knocked together with other drugs such as tik or heroin or cocaine.
