Golf estate murders: No breach of security

Cape Town - There was no breach of security at an upmarket golf estate in Stellenbosch where three family members were found brutally murdered, News24 was told on Tuesday.

The father, 54, mother, 55, and 22-year-old son were attacked in their home in the De Zalze Golf Estate in the early hours of the morning, Sapa quoted Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut as saying.

A source on the estate confirmed to News24 that the victims were attacked with an axe.

The family’s 16-year-old daughter was seriously injured. She was admitted to Stellenbosch Mediclinic and will later be transported to Vergelegen Mediclinic in Somerset West.

De Zalze Homeowners Association chairperson Eben Potgieter told News24 they had found no breach of security. He said there was an 8km fence surrounding the estate and there are security cameras around the property.

He said it was also unclear if anything was stolen or missing from the family’s home.

“Forensics will be on the scene for three days,” said Potgieter.

Eyewitness News tweeted earlier on Tuesday that a man in his twenties had been taken in for questioning but, in a statement to News24, police said no arrests had been made.

According to a resident who wished to remain anonymous, the family’s 20-year-old son was found by a neighbour sitting outside the family home with a phone in his hand. The neighbour is thought to have contacted the police who then arrived at the estate and informed security of the murder scene.

The resident said there was speculation as to the motive of the murder but would not divulge further.

According to the estate’s website three companies manage security on site in addition to a neighbourhood watch.

The luxury estate includes a golf course, a winery, three restaurants and guest lodges. A property on the estate, advertised on Redzproperties.co.za boasts a five-bedroom home with a gym, four bathrooms and a study.
