Durban - Despite “strict measures” to prohibit soldiers from pocketing arms and explosives, a former soldier allegedly purloined two hand grenades that he used to kill his wife at the weekend.
The man remains on the run as the hunt for him enters its third day.
His identity is known to police.
News24 reported that 33-year-old Letshego Nteke Mohoasa died as a result of her injuries after her husband allegedly threw a military spec grenade at her in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It is understood that he had thrown two hand grenades at his wife at their Karridene Road home after an argument. One of the hand grenades failed to detonate.
On Tuesday South African National Defence Force (SANDF) spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga decried the alleged murder.
“The SANDF steadfastly condemns this brutal killing and wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” he said.
“All SANDF members are strictly prohibited from carrying arms and ammunition when they are off duty. As such, strict measures are applied to ensure that members do not contravene them.
“It is regrettable that the SANDF is unable to comment further on this senseless killing as this matter is being investigated by the relevant authorities. The SANDF undertakes to support and assist in the investigation where and when required,” Mabanga said.
KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that no arrests have been made yet.
