Cape Town - A Gugulethu man has been sentenced to life behind bars for killing his sister-in-law.
Lungile Tshunungwa, 51, was recently handed the maximum sentence in the Wynberg Regional Court for the murder committed five years ago.
Tshunungwa had had a heated argument with his wife Pumza on July 29, 2010 and threatened to kill her, the court heard.
The woman fled their home and went to the Gugulethu police station for safety, Manenberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett said in a statement.
“Because he could not get to her, he drove to his sister-in-law Nomzame Ngcula’s home in Cathedral Peak, Heideveld.
“She had just got home and as she got out of her car, Tshunungwa pulled up behind her, got out and without warning fired several shots at her, hitting her in the head and upper body.”
The woman died at the scene and the killer fled in his car.
Tshunungwa managed to evade police for two weeks.
Investigating officer Constable Ayanda Dyusha, along with Warrant Officer Rodney Abrahams, attended the woman’s funeral in hopes of catching him after he threatened to disrupt proceedings.
A week after the funeral, he was arrested at a petrol station in Gugulethu after a resident tipped police off.
“The case has taken five years to be finalised and it shows that the long arm of the law is also very patient in delivering justice,” Bennett said.
Tshunungwa is serving his sentence at Pollsmoor Prison.
