Hadeda dies after being shot with 'toy' arrow in Kloof

Durban - The SPCA in KwaZulu-Natal has urged people not to target animals with their "toys" after a hadeda died after being shot with an arrow.

Spokesperson Lisa Gadd of the Kloof and Highway SPCA said they received a call about the injured bird on Friday.

“We received a call from a concerned member of the public who had seen an injured hadeda in their garden. Inspector Simamane and Trainee Inspector Nkomo responded to the call and went to investigate at the residence in Kloof.”

“Upon arrival they saw two hadedas in the back garden and one of them was seriously injured. One hadeda flew away as they approached, but the injured hadeda battled to move away and was only able to fly as high as waist height. The inspectors caught the injured hadeda and rushed it back to the Kloof and Highway SPCA clinic,” she said.

“An arrow was protruding from the bird’s torso and had penetrated right through. The arrow measured 75cm in length. Unfortunately the bird could not be saved as it has suffered such a severe injury.”

“We urge parents to teach their children to be responsible when using their toys and not to use innocent animals as targets.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA has a zero tolerance policy of animal cruelty and ask members of the public to report any cruelty that they witness. We would like to thank the kind member of the public for phoning us so that we could help this poor injured bird from further suffering,” she added.
