Johannesburg - The Gauteng health department is investigating claims that some Johannesburg clinics have been forcing patients to undergo HIV/Aids tests.
"As a department we have emphasised that health professionals must follow protocol and conduct themselves in a professional manner. There is no one who must be compelled to undergo any HIV/Aids tests at our health facilities," spokesperson Steve Mabona told News24 on Friday.
He said the department was informed that forced tests were allegedly being done at clinics in Hillbrow, Eldorado Park Extention 9 and 4th Avenue in Alexandra.
DA Gauteng member of the provisional legislature Jack Bloom said earlier that there were reports of forced tests.
"In some cases mothers are apparently told they need to have a HIV/Aids test before their children will be vaccinated," he said in a statement.
"Medical staff should follow established protocols and ensure that there is proper consent from patients in diagnosing and treating HIV/Aids."
Mabona urged people who were forced to undergo such tests to call the department on 011 694 3705/10.
