'Heart eater' case postponed

Cape Town - A man accused of cutting out and eating another man's heart appeared in the Athlone Magistrate's Court in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Wearing a tracksuit with the words "Twisted Soul" emblazoned on the front, 35-year-old Andrew Chimboza was led into the dock after being denied bail in July.

Prosecutor Quawnita Geyer said the investigation in the matter was incomplete and the State awaited DNA results.

Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis acknowledged that results of DNA tests usually took a while.

She told Chimboza he would remain in custody until 28 October.

The Zimbabwean national grimaced and seemed frustrated as he was led down a staircase to the holding cells.

Chimboza is accused of stabbing 62-year-old Mbuyiselo Manona to death at the Gugulethu home of a former female client of his in June.

When he applied for bail, Chimboza admitted to stabbing Manona to death in self-defence after he was attacked.

The State alleged that it had eyewitnesses who saw him sitting on top of Manona, eating chopped pieces of his heart.

In denying him bail in July, Ellis said there was a prima facie case against him and that releasing him would be an injustice.

The case was likely to be heard by a regional court or the Western Cape High Court.
