Hikers airlifted from Table Mountain

Durban - Three people injured during a rock fall on Table Mountain have been rescued by a military helicopter on Sunday.

Two others who were also wounded were walked to safety by mountain rescuers.

Wilderness Search and Rescue spokesperson Johan Marais said the party of fourteen hikers had been taking a guided walk through the Blinkwater Ravine when a boulder dislodged and tumbled down a hill, hitting five of the group.

Marais said that one person, the most seriously injured, had been pinned beneath the boulder.

“The group had a guide who is also a Wilderness Search and Rescue volunteer. They suddenly heard a boulder falling and then it hit them,” he said.

“Two people that had sustained slight injuries were walked down the trail but three who could not be moved stayed on the mountain.

“We used an Oryx helicopter which took off from Ysterplaat and successfully rescued them from the ravine,” Marais added.
