Hundreds in Jhb want green energy

Johannesburg - Scores of people in Johannesburg joined a global demonstration on Sunday to demand environmentally friendly energy.

Young and old donned white T-shirts and had green hearts painted on their cheeks at the event, organised by civic organisation Avaaz and climate justice group 350.org.

The demonstration, held at Emmarentia Dam, was one of hundreds taking part in cities around the world ahead of a United Nations climate change summit on Tuesday.

Environmental activists are calling on world leaders to adopt 100% clean energy to help avert a possible climate change crisis.

Clean energy is power that is produced from renewable sources and is environmentally friendly.

As part of the campaign, demonstrators stood in a heart shape marked on a field as a radio-controlled helicopter took photographs from above.

The photographs, along with others from similar events in other cities, would be displayed at the climate summit in New York.

Ferrial Adam, a team leader of 350.org, told the crowd everyone could play their part in helping prevent climate change.

"We need to be more involved, put pressure on our local councillors who will pass it on to provincial and national leaders."

In a water-scarce country like South Africa "fracking is the worst thing we could do", Adam said.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
