Inspectors threatened at Modise's farm - report

Johannesburg - Two NSPCA inspectors are expected to lay charges against National Council of Provinces chairperson Thandi Modise's farm manager and spokesperson after allegedly being threatened with violence at her farm, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Modise's pigs reportedly began eating each other from hunger earlier this month. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) had to euthanise 117, and confiscate 120 after 80 had died.

Inspectors Grace de Lange and Burt Coetzee visited Modise's farm Modderfontein on Friday to evaluate the remaining animals.

Threats

They were let in by a new farmworker and had just seen some of the animals when a man in a blue Golf raced up and shouted that they must get away from the cattle, according to De Lange.

She said she recognised him as Neo Moepi, Modise's farm manager and spokesperson from pictures she has seen.

"Neo jumped out and shouted 'You should be scared of me and what I can do'."

At the gate the man who had let them in blocked their path and banged on the car window. During a struggle he took their car keys and reportedly threatened to kick the car and set it alight.

Moepi drove the NSPCA bakkie out and reportedly grabbed Coetzee's cellphone which contained recordings of the conversations.

The other man erased everything.

Comment was not available from Moepi.

The NSPCA is also pursuing criminal charges over the animals' treatment.
