Johannesburg - Police have dispersed protesters and cleared the R554 road in Eikenhof, south of Johannesburg, metro police said on Thursday.
"Protesters have been dispersed. We are not sure if they will come back again," said police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.
She said metro police and the SA Police Service were deployed to the area on Thursday morning and managed to dispersed residents. "The Johannesburg Road Agency workers were sent to clear the road by midday."
Earlier, residents threw stones at passing cars and motorists were advised to avoid the road.
Apparently two illegal shacks were demolished in the area on Tuesday, angering residents.
Mamonyane did not know if anyone had been arrested or if any injuries were reported.
"I do not have that information but police would know."
Spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini could not be immediately reached for a comment.
