K9's Sheeba, Crunchie sniff out ammo stash

Johannesburg - Two policemen patrolling with their dogs in Muldersdrift stumbled on a pile of dumped live and used ammunition, Krugersdorp police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Lucky Matome said the officers from the K9 unit were walking with their dogs Sheeba, an aquatic specialist, and Crunchie, who has a nose for explosives, when they came upon the stash.

They found shotgun rounds, live rounds from hunting rifles and live rounds of 9mm pistols.

They also found empty shell casings, and boxes that might link the find to the arrest of whoever dropped the items in the field in the semi agricultural region west of Johannesburg.

"We cannot say yet whether it was stolen ammunition, or merely dumped," said Matome.

An investigation into the origin of the ammunition is under way.
