Durban - The police will not hesitate to arrest their own members caught up in criminal activities, KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said on Friday.
She has strongly condemned the alleged involvement of two police officers in a robbery in Greenwood Park. They were arrested with two other suspects on Thursday evening.
"We will strongly act against those members involved in any criminal activities and disciplinary steps will be taken against them. I congratulate our members who acted swiftly and managed to arrest the suspects a few minutes after the robbery," she said.
On Thursday at about 18:30, a man and his friends were driving along North Coast Road on their way to the airport when they were stopped by the suspects, who were driving in a blue Kia.
The victims were threatened with a firearm and robbed of their cash and Canadian notes. The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle and the police were notified.
Greenwood Park police reacted swiftly and spotted the suspicious vehicle in the area and tried to stop it. The occupants fled the scene on foot towards the nearby bushes.
The Durban K9 unit as well as Inanda Tactical Response Team were called for assistance and all four suspects were arrested.
Money taken during the robbery was recovered. A state firearm suspected to be used during the robbery was also recovered as well as a bullet proof vest.
All four suspects aged between 25 and 50 are due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
