KZN demonstrators say no to abortion

Durban - More than 1 000 demonstrators took to the streets of Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday, calling for abortion to be made illegal.

Speaking to News24 on Tuesday, Doctors For Life International CEO Dr Albu Van Eeden said the event was observed annually by the National Alliance For Life (NAL) as part of the National March For Life.

This event is held once a year on the first Sunday in October in several cities in South Africa.

"We hope to spread a better understanding and improve the general public's understanding of abortion.

"Science has shown us that life for a human being begins when it is at very early stages of development. We find people advocate more for animal rights... than [for] humans. We want to spread more detail about how wrong abortion really is."

Van Eeden said since 1997 more than 1.2 million abortions had taken place in South Africa.

"I am happy to announce that our demonstrations have grown over the years. From hundreds, we now have thousands and 70%... are youth."
