Key Media24 appointments to drive Afrikaans digital-first publishing

Cape Town - Media24 has announced key appointments to drive digital-first publishing in Afrikaans.

The company said on Thursday that Beeld editor Adriaan Basson would become the full time editor-in-chief of Netwerk24 from September 1. Basson has been the editor of Beeld since 2013. He will lead a team of news editors, journalists and sub editors who will be appointed to Netwerk24. Basson's team will work closely with News24's newly appointed team of journalists.

Netwerk24 is the biggest paid-for news site in South Africa and home to Media24’s dailies as well as Sunday newspaper Rapport.

A new Beeld editor will be appointed soon.

Additionally, Jo van Eeden has been appointed editor-in-chief of Media24's Afrikaans dailies, Beeld, Die Burger and Volksblad.

Van Eeden, who has just returned from a year at Harvard University as South Africa's Nieman Fellow, will also begin her role on September 1. Van Eeden has been the editor of Volksblad since 2012.

The company said Van Eeden would be tasked with "driving synergies across Media24's Afrikaans dailies and positioning the teams for creating digital-first content on Netwerk24".

Media24 also announced the appointment of Gert Coetzee, assistant editor at Volksblad, as editor of the Free State newspaper. Coetzee started his career at Volksblad in 1986 and has since held several roles.

Ishmet Davidson, head of Media24’s News division, said these key appointments would accelerate Media24’s focus on digital-first publishing.

"We are extremely proud of our news portfolio, both print and digital, and [are] committed to accelerating our leading position in the South African media landscape. For us, it is about serving our audiences in the best possible way – whether on digital platforms or in print. We couldn’t ask for a better editorial team to lead the charge."
