Khayelitsha residents protest outside court ahead of land grab hearing

Cape Town- Around 60 Khayelitsha residents protested outside the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday afternoon ahead of a land grab hearing.

The group, many wearing EFF T-shirts and berets, clapped, sang and held posters while a row of police officers stood between them and the court entrance.

The officers seemed relaxed and chatted with each other to pass the time.

Other supporters sat on the pavement watching the action.

Arms manufacturer Denel was on Tuesday seeking to finalise an order stopping anyone from further occupying its land, which is next to the Nolungile train station in Khayelitsha.

EFF's deputy chair for that ward, 36-year-old Khayaletu Ntsokwana, told News24 that they were protesting because everyone had apparently been evicted from the land two weeks ago, including those who were there before any interdicts were obtained.

"The sheriff [of the court] ordered the captain to remove those people and they got beaten. They took down all the shacks. Nobody is there now," he said.

Ntsokwana said people occupied the land because it was empty. He reiterated that the party's policy was to expropriate land without compensation for equal distribution among citizens.

"It is up to them [the party] to make the people get the land and get what they want".
