Cape Town - The eight young women who died in Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape following a stampede in a tavern will be laid to rest next week, it was reported.
Eyewitness News reported that the eight would be buried in separate ceremonies in Khayelithsa and the Eastern Cape.
Hundreds of people, including religious groups, political parties and pupils attended a memorial service for the eight at the Chris Hani Secondary School in Makhaza on Sunday evening.
The eight victims were aged between 15 and 23 and two of them were killed when the vehicle they were transported in crashed on the way to hospital.
Six people, between the ages of 17 and 24, were injured.
It was previously reported that shots fired apparently inside the tavern led to the stampede on June 28.
News24 reported that one of the youngest victims of the disaster was Anathi Zokufa who was celebrating her 15th birthday.
“She was a very happy child and nothing was wrong. She always used to talk with us and make jokes. She wanted to be a lawyer,” her father Zamikhaya Zokhufa said.
Police had opened an inquest docket to determine if anyone could be held responsible for the deaths.
